CLEARFIELD — A man who was changing a tire on the side of the freeway was hit and killed Wednesday night.

A 35-year-old man was driving a pickup truck when it broke down while in the southbound HOV lane on I-15 near the Antelope Drive exit about 7:30 p.m. He got out of his truck and was in the narrow shoulder area between the truck and concrete barrier, where it was dark, according to the Utah Highway Patrol.

Police said they believe the man was changing his left rear wheel.

Drivers did not see him until it was too late and swerved to get out of the way. The driver of a silver Malibu saw a car ahead swerve at the last second to the right, and the Malibu driver swerved to the left, hitting the rear of the truck and striking the man in the shoulder of the freeway before crashing into the wall, said UHP Sgt. Rick Shrader.

The man died at the scene. His identity has not yet been released.

The Malibu driver, a 25-year-old man, sustained minor injuries in the crash.
