Woman, 70s, dies after being hit by car in Cork

A woman in her 70s has died after being hit by a car in Co Cork.

The woman was with another pedestrian, a man in his 60s, on Main Street in Charleville when the incident happened shortly before 2pm yesterday.

Both were taken to Cork University Hospital with serious injuries.

The woman in her 70s was later pronounced dead. The man's condition is understood to be stable.

The woman has been named as Mary Fehilly.

The scene has been examined by garda forensic collision investigators and the local coroner has been notified.

A post-mortem examination is due to be arranged.

Gardaí have appealed to anyone who may have witnessed the incident to come forward.

They are also seeking mobile phone and dash-cam footage from anyone who was in the vicinity of Main Street, Charleville, at the time of the collision.

Her son-in-law and Fianna Fáil TD for Clare Cathal Crowe posted on social media that he was heartbroken over her death.

Mr Crowe said he "struck gold" when he married in to his wife Maeve's "amazing" family.

"The fabuous lynchpin of that family was Mary Fehilly. We are absolutely heartbroken to have tragically lost Mary this weekend.

"She was the most wonderful mother to Maeve and her siblings and an adoring wife to George," he said.
