A 17-year-old single dad is in a coma after his motorbike collided with a car while he was on his way to the shops.

Jake Styler's family have revealed that he may need to relearn how to walk and talk following the crash involving his red Lexmoto motorbike last Thursday. The young father, who is the primary carer for his one-year-old son, suffered two blood clots on the brain, crushed feet and hands, a broken nose, and lacerated lungs in the accident.

Family friend Josie Littlefield, 51, is fundraising to cover the daily travel costs from St Austell, Cornwall, to Derriford Hospital, Plymouth, for Jake's family. Josie, from Bodmin, said: "Jake may never be the same when he wakes up - he was never perfect, but he was good-as-gold, and such a happy-go-lucky kid.

"He's looking after his one year old son - it's been hard enough for the family. But now, they're having to look after this little man as well. I just want to help them make things a bit easier."

The accident happened at about 8:30pm on October 17, when Jake was riding his motorbike towards the Co-op in Bugle, St Austell. At the same time, a car was driving on the opposite side of the road and the two vehicles collided as the car driver turned into the supermarket car park.

Jake was thrown off his bike and an ambulance rushed him straight to The Royal Cornwall Hospital, Truro. "An ambulance turned up, and a police car," Josie added.

"The paramedics thought he was well enough to walk to the ambulance - because he only looked like he had cuts and bruises."

The teenager was rushed to Derriford Hospital for emergency surgery after a full body scan revealed two brain bleeds. He was placed in an induced coma with a breathing tube post-surgery.

Josie said: "He's in a bad way - but fingers crossed, he'll be able to come out of it."

His twin brother Josh was brought in to see him and was so shocked he "fell to the floor". Despite being in a coma, Jake made movements and even sat up in bed, which Josie believes may have been because he could hear his twin.

She added: "Twins are more than siblings - they have such a close bond. Jake's nurses had to sedate him to prevent further injury. In the coming days, doctors will remove Jake's feeding tube to see if he can breathe independently. However, they warn he may need to relearn basic skills and might "never be the same. "

Devon and Cornwall Police are investigating a two-vehicle traffic collision in Bugle and urge any witnesses or anyone with dashcam footage to contact them on 101 quoting log number 808 of 17/10/24."

Josie has set up a GoFundMe campaign to support Jake as he continues to recover. As of Wednesday morning, more than £1,300 has been raised - smashing its original £500 target.
