US election: Bombshell poll reveals Kamala Harris pulling ahead of Donald Trump in key state
Vice President Kamala Harris looks set to win over a formerly Republican state in a last-minute boost over Donald Trump - days before one of the closest presidential elections in history
by Zahra Khaliq · The MirrorKamala Harris appears to have made a last-minute victory over Donald Trump less than three days before Election Day – by winning over a reliably Republican state.
The vice president saw a boost in polls on Saturday night which saw her taking the lead over Trump in Iowa. The state hasn’t had a Democratic win since Barack Obama’s reign in 2012 – but now sees Harris beating Trump 47% to 44% among likely voters, according to the final Des Moines Register/Mediacom Iowa Poll.
With the two candidates tied across multiple US states, the poll said the 3% gap may get even smaller in the coming days.
While several Americans are set to cast their ballots on Election Day on November 5, more than 70 million have already voted. Iwoa polls in September saw Trump with a four point lead over Harris, although aides said another poll showing the 78-year-old in the lead “far more closely reflect[ed] the state of the actual Iowa electorate”.
The campaign also slammed Des Moines' Register poll, claiming massive surges for the Republicans are being seen in many early voters compared to 2020. It also questioned the suggestion that Harris has won over women by 20 points, and seniors by 19.
The sudden surge for Harris in Iowa has reportedly been triggered by independent women voters, giving her a 28 point lead with these female voters over Trump. A seperate poll on the state shows conflicting figures, suggesting the Republican's are in the lead. The data, by Emerson College found shows ex-president with a 53% lead to Harris' 43%.
Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds rejected Des Moines' figures on Saturday night, saying Republicans had an advantage in early voting. She wrote on X: "Iowa Republicans are leading in early voting for the first time in decades, and have increased our voter registration advantage by 130,000+. President Trump will win Iowa if we vote and turnout our friends. Let’s prove the Des Moines Register wrong again!"
Callum Hunter, J.L. Partners' data scientist, said however that recent polling is in Harris' favour, MailOnline reports. He added: "Trump's win probability has dropped 7 points in five days, and if more polling is released that shows similar patterns from recent days then the race will flip from LEAN Trump to TOSSUP before election day."
