How did Liam Payne die? Tragic details from police as body sent for autopsy

Former One Direction star Liam Payne tragically died on Wednesday while on holiday in Argentina, and an investigation and autopsy is to take place

The death of Liam Payne stunned the world on Wednesday.

The former One Direction man died after an incident in a Buenos Aires hotel. He was aged just 31. Now, as his body has been sent for an autopsy, details are being shared about the fatal incident.

The singer fell from the third floor of an exclusive boutique hotel building in the Argentinian capital. Police, firefighters and ambulances were seen outside of a hotel building after Liam tragically fell. Circumstances surrounding his death remain unclear.

A body was found in an internal patio of the hotel shortly after 5pm local time, with it believed that Liam fell from around 13 or 14 metres. He is said to have suffered "very serious injuries incompatible with life."

Police in Buenos Aires confirmed Liam's death in a statement. They said: "Liam James Payne, composer and guitarist, former member of the band One Direction, died today after falling from the third floor of a hotel in Palermo."

In another statement, the local ambulance manager told TN: "At 17.04 through the 911 integrated public safety system, we were alerted of a person who was in an internal courtyard of the management of a south house hotel. At 17.11 a SAME team arrived and verified the death of this man and later we found out that he was a singer in a musical group.

"Unfortunately, he had injuries that were incompatible with life, as a result of his fall, so we had to confirm his death, there was no possibility of resuscitation."

Emergency medical services director Alberto Crescenti also spoke to local news outlet Clarin following the tragedy. He said: "We verified his identity using the passport he had." He then added: "The team saw that he apparently had a fracture at the base of the skull."

It's been reported that the hotel had put a call to police to ask for assistant. It's said hotel workers reported "an aggressive man who may have been under the effects of drugs and alcohol". However, this has not been officially confirmed. Local media reports Liam had been "acting erratically in the hotel lobby and smashed his laptop" before he 'had to be carried back to his room"

Liam's body is currently in Buenos Aires Judicial Morgue awaiting an autopsy, according to The Latin Times. An investigation has also been launched.

Tributes were shared online by fans and famous friends of Liam's following the sad news. Among those paying respect was Harry Styles' mum. She posted on Instagram in view of her 2.5 million followers. Her post included a black screen with a red broken heart emoji across it. Captioning her upload, she penned: "Just a boy...," alongside another broken heart.
