A crash between a tram and bus has caused rush hour chaos in the Manchester city centre. Emergency services have flooded to Piccadilly Gardens in response to the ongoing incident.

According to the Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service, specialist equipment is being used to rescue someone from the bus. Road closures are in place and Metrolink services between Victoria and Piccadilly Gardens have been suspended following the smash.

An air ambulance has landed on the grass area of the main city centre square after a bus and tram appear to have collided. The crash occurred outside Betfred and Primark at the top of Mosley Street.

Firefighters, road ambulances and police cars are all also at the scene. Images and footage of Piccadilly Gardens shows the tram and bus have been taped off to the general public.

As a result, there is severe disruption on the tram and bus network across the city centre.

Piccadilly Gardens is busy with pedestrians and many people around the bus stops just across from the collision, on Parker Street.

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) has said: “At just after 2.40pm on Friday (October 18) three fire engines from Withington, Manchester Central and Wythenshawe fire stations plus the technical response unit from Leigh fire station attended a crash involving a bus and a tram on Mosley Street, Manchester.

“Firefighters, working alongside colleagues from Greater Manchester Police, North West Ambulance Service and Metrolink, are using specialist cutting equipment to rescue one casualty from the bus. Crews were in attendance for around one and a half hours.”
