Man dies after 'collapsing onto tracks' and being hit by tram

A man has tragically died after being hit by a tram in Salford.

Emergency crews descended on the scene at the Harbour City Metrolink stop in the Salford Quays area at around 10.25pm last night (Sunday, October 20). A huge cordon was put in place as police, fire crews and paramedics responded.

Sadly, the man was pronounced dead on the scene. His age has not been revealed by Greater Manchester Police at this stage.

A spokesperson for the force said 'it is believed that the man may have collapsed or fallen onto the tracks'. He was then hit by a tram.

No arrests have been made. An investigation into the incident is now underway.

Last night, pictures showed a large cordon in place around the tram stop. A forensic screen was erected on the tracks as investigations were carried out.

Police now want to speak to any witnesses, or anyone with information about what happened. "Our Serious Collision Investigation Unit (SCIU) are now appealing for anyone with information to please come forward", GMP said in a statement.

"This includes any relevant CCTV footage from the surrounding areas. Anyone with any information is asked to contact police via 101, gmp.police.uk, or 0161 856 4741, quoting log 3270 of 20/10/24.

"Alternatively, you can call the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111."

Ian Davies, TfGM’s Network Director for Metrolink, said: "We are very saddened to hear about the death of a man following an incident near Harbour City tram stop on Sunday evening. Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this very difficult time.

"The Metrolink operator is supporting police with their enquiries and this work is ongoing."
