The main road was blocked as emergency crews responded. Witnesses reported seeing privacy screens erected around the incident.

One person, who drove past the scene, described the crash as 'horrendous' in a post on social media, as another witness said: "As I passed, an ambulance was leaving with blue lights on and the top of the car had been cut off."

Greater Manchester Police also confirmed the collision involved two vehicles and that there were no serious injuries reported.

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) said: “At around 4.20pm yesterday afternoon (Friday 4 October), two fire engines from Irlam and Eccles fire stations and the enhanced rescue unit from Ashton-under-Lyne fire station attended a crash involving two vehicles on Boysnope Wharf, Eccles.

“Firefighters used cutting equipment, a trauma pack and a longboard to remove the roof of one vehicle and help extricate a person before passing them into the care of North West Ambulance Service. Crews were in attendance for roughly 40 minutes."
