Heavy overnight rains in Bengaluru on Tuesday (October 22, 2024) led to waterlogging on roads and in houses, particularly around the Kodigehalli and Yelahanka underpasses.

The GKVK compound wall collapsed near Judicial Layout, and water entered an apartment complex in Kodigehalli.

Residents of the Kendriya Vihar apartments at Yelahanka, who have been increasingly bearing the brunt of the rains and the consequent flooding, have been reportedly asked to evacuate.

“One more compound wall has collapsed, and there’s way more water this time. We have been told to evacuate and NDRF boats are here. There will be no drinking water or power for the next 24-48 hours,” said Amruth Kiran, a resident of the apartment.

Yelahanka zonal commissioner inspected the site. BBMP in a post on X said, “Dewatering work is under process to clear all stagnant water”. Several homes in Basava Samithi Layout, Venkataswamappa Layout, MS Palya, and Telecom Layout were also affected.

At the Kempegowda International Airport, in addition to 20 late arrivals and the diversion of three Indigo flights from Delhi, Hyderabad, Chandigarh and one Air india flight from Delhi to Chennai, one international flight from Bangkok was also diverted to Chennai on Monday October 21 night due to a heavy downpour.

In view of the downpour, the Bengaluru Urban Deputy Commissioner Jagadish G. had ordered the closure of schools and Anganwadi centres on Monday.

Revenue Minister Krishna Byregowda visited some of the rain-affected areas. “Due to cloudburst in and around Vidyaranyapura surrounding areas, the Doddabommasandra Lake is overflowing after more than 17 years. Due to overflowing lake water is flooding lower layouts. I am in the areas trying to expedite BBMP relief work,” Mr. Byregowda said.
