Oil containers explode in Plymouth garage fire
by Molly Seaman · PlymouthLiveA number of oil containers have exploded as a fire broke out at a garage in the city this morning, Friday, November 1. Loud bangs were heard and a huge plume of smoke rose above the city.
The burst containers have caused oil to run down the road to King Street and towards Western Approach in the Stonehouse area of the city. It is thought the roads will be closed for some time as the clean-up operation takes place.
Firefighters are currently working to extinguish the fire and make the scene safe. A spokesperson for Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue said: "We’re working closely with the Environment Agency, due to water run-off into the main road."
A cordon remains in place as police officers assist the fire service. Local residents have been told to keep doors and windows closed.
A spokesperson for Devon and Cornwall Police has said: "There was an issue with oil running onto the road. It appears the fire is under control now."
The fire broke out at around 9.30am this morning at a garage on Belmont Street. Thick smoke was seen across the city as firefighters battled the blaze.
One person said that the smoke was "a weird brown colour" and could be seen from Milehouse. Plymouth Highways has also warned that there will be delays throughout the early afternoon.
It said: "King Street is currently closed from Octagon Street to Western Approach. This is due to a fire and emergency services are in attendance. Expect delays."
