Who Is The Killer In ‘Time Cut?’ The Thriller’s Twist Ending Explained
by Monica Mercuri · ForbesNetflix’s new slasher horror film Time Cut is currently the No. 1 movie on the streaming site. Toward the end of the movie, two pressing questions remain: who is Sweetly Slasher killer, and can Lucy save her sister in time?
Starring Madison Bailey (Outer Banks) and Antonia Gentry (Ginny & Georgia), the time-traveling thriller follows high school senior Lucy Field, who lives in the shadow of her older sister Summer, one of four teenagers murdered by a serial killer 20 years earlier in Sweetly, Minnesota.
When Lucy is unexpectedly transported to 2003—a time filled with Juicy Couture tracksuits and Hilary Duff’s “So Yesterday”—she seizes the opportunity to track down and stop her sister’s killer. As she spends time in the past, Lucy bonds with Summer and becomes determined to change her sister’s fate.
But Lucy’s existence is tied to her parents’ grief over Summer’s death, raising the possibility that if Summer survives, Lucy might never be born. “Lucy has to literally choose between her sister’s life and her own existence,” director and co-writer Hannah Macpherson told Netflix’s Tudum. “I just thought that was so brilliant. To be able to dig into the thematics of family — what are we willing to sacrifice?”

Who’s The Killer In Time Cut On Netflix?
Summer’s killer in Time Cut is the future self of her classmate Quinn, a teen who is bullied and befriends Lucy when she travels back in time.
This comes as a shock to many viewers because, in the alternate timeline, Quinn helps Lucy and Summer save Emmy from being killed. He also helps the sisters try to find a way to get rid the killer and fix the time machine so Lucy can go back to the future.
Why Did Future Quinn Kill Summer And Her Friends?
The nerdy outcast grew up hating those who bullied him in high school, and he disliked Summer for rejecting his romantic advances. As an adult, Quinn built a time machine to travel back in time to murder Summer and all of her friends who wronged him.
Thankfully, in the alternate timeline, Lucy rescuing Quinn from being dropped into a river by a group of bullies helped prevent him from heading down the path to become the Sweetly Slasher.
So, while the Quinn of the past is still good, the Quinn of the future transforms into the time-traveling Sweetly Slasher, avenging those who laughed at him.
Does Lucy Save Summer in Time Cut?
Yes, thankfully, Lucy was able to save her sister Summer. She lures him into Quinn’s garage and activates the time machine. Now in the future, they fight in a car park, and Lucy stabs the Future Quinn through the heart, killing him, while the Past Quinn can continue living his life.
While in 2024, Lucy discovers that by saving Summer in 2003, her former life no longer exists. But Lucy’s not too upset; now, she can live happily with her sister Summer and her new friend Quinn in the 2003 timeline.
Macpherson revealed to Tudum that Time Cut had multiple alternative endings. “We had a variety of different options for endings, including both sisters being alive in the present day,” she explained.
For example, one ending involved Summer being 20 years older than Lucy, but they were both alive. However, the director felt “that that image of 45-year-old Summer and teenage Lucy wasn’t as happy as the two girls as teenagers getting to experience life together. It just felt so good, time-travel logic be damned.”
