Girl, 10, mauled to death by family's XL Bully dog pictured for first time
by Sam Cooper, Antony Clements-Thrower · NottinghamshireLiveA "wonderful" schoolgirl tragically killed by her family's pet dog has been named for the first time since the horrific incident in Malton, Yorkshire. Ten-year-old Savannah Bentham was the victim of a fatal dog attack that North Yorkshire Police responded to on Friday following a call from the Yorkshire Ambulance Service.
The American Bully XL involved in the attack is set to be put down. In a heart-wrenching statement released through the police, Savannah's family expressed their devastation: "We are utterly shocked and devastated by what happened to Savannah."
They continued: "We can't believe we have lost our wonderful girl who we love so much. We thank everyone for their support and kindness as we struggle to come to terms with our loss. We ask that our family's privacy is respected while we grieve for Savannah."
North Yorkshire Police were called at approximately 4.15pm and have stated that the family is receiving support from specially trained officers.
Despite attempts by medical professionals and a public-spirited individual who tried to help, Savannah sadly passed away at the scene. Investigations into the incident are ongoing, with the force examining all aspects thoroughly, reports the Mirror.
A spokesman said: "One of the lines of enquiry relates to the behaviour of the dog to help explain, as far as possible, why it attacked the girl. All indications so far suggest it was out-of-character, with Savannah and the dog having a close, loving relationship. Due to the circumstances of the incident, the dog will be destroyed."
