UK weather maps are set to turn a chilly shade of blue, signalling the onset of freezing temperatures. As autumn deepens and winter approaches, Brits are preparing for colder days ahead.

WXCharts has pinpointed the date when the nation will start to feel the frosty bite. Weather forecasts had previously hinted at the possibility of snow this weekend, and it appears that icy temperatures are hot on its heels.

On Sunday, October 13 some parts of the UK are expected to plummet to zero degrees, with others hovering just above. While London and the south maintain a cool 6°C, the charts show Scotland and parts of the northeast bracing for bone-chilling 0°C conditions.

Inverness and areas below Edinburgh are forecasted by WXCharts to experience these freezing temperatures. The Met Office, however, suggests slightly milder conditions than WXCharts, but agrees that today's weather will be "cloudy, dry and cold" across the country.

Their extended forecast also warns of the impending cold and "unsettled" weather patterns, reports the Mirror.

The Met Office's outlook for October 17 to October 26 indicates a period of significant meteorological turmoil with widespread rainfall expected. The forecast states: "Through the second half of next week conditions will be very unsettled with rain affecting most regions at times. The heaviest rain is likely to be in the west or southwest to begin with, but later in the week, the focus probably shifting to central and eastern areas. Following the rain, a drier and brighter interlude is probable, before conditions turn unsettled once again by next weekend."

They added that while much of the wet weather, including showers and strong winds, may hit the northwest part of the country, the southeast should experience mostly dry and sunny conditions with above-average warmth, providing a pleasant respite in brighter moments.

Going ahead into late October, there is a possibility of calmer weather, albeit with a drop in temperatures to more typical levels, inviting the onset of some frost and fog. Contrary to previous reports by WXCharts predicting an impending "Arctic Freeze" that had people bracing for intense cold, particularly in the farther reaches of Scotland, the Met Office forecasts suggest that the earliest signs of frost and mist might emerge in the closing days of October, with increased frequency as November approaches.

The forecasters disclosed: "Potentially some wet and windy weather at first, especially in the northwest, but a trend towards more settled conditions is most favoured for late October as high pressure becomes increasingly dominant. This would bring the potential for frost and fog at night, and possibly large variations between daytime and overnight temperatures. Into early November, high pressure may become more centred to the northwest of the UK, resulting in a gradual trend towards more unsettled conditions, particularly across southern regions."
