Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Atishi on Saturday took oath on Saturday as Delhi's third woman Chief Minister and made history by becoming the youngest of all three to hold the top office in the national capital.

Atishi was administered oath as the eighth Chief Minister of Delhi by Lieutenant Governor V K Saxena at Raj Niwas in a low-key affair.

Overcome with emotion after taking the oath, Atishi immediately sought the blessings of her mentor and AAP chief, Arvind Kejriwal, by touching his feet.

Atishi, a first-time Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) representing the Kalkaji constituency, became the 17th woman to serve as Chief Minister in India and only the third in Delhi, following in the footsteps of Congress stalwart Sheila Dikshit and BJP's Sushma Swaraj.

Her ascension to the role comes after Kejriwal stepped down as Delhi Chief Minister earlier this week following his release on bail in connection with the excise policy case. Kejriwal had spent over five months in Tihar Jail before being granted bail on September 13.

Meanwhile, Kejriwal, who was present at the ceremony, was even greeted warmly by Saxena and other senior officials, in a rare display of cordiality between the two political leaders who have often clashed over governance issues in the city.

BJP MP Manoj Tiwari was among the first to congratulate Atishi, wishing her success while voicing concerns about the city's governance.

"I extend my best wishes to Atishi for becoming the third woman Chief Minister of Delhi. I have shared my concerns regarding the state of Delhi with her, and we will offer our full support in the coming 3 - 4 months," Tiwari said.

Delhi Assembly Speaker Ram Niwas Goel, Leader of Opposition Vijender Gupta, BJP MPs, including Union Minister of State Harsh Malhotra, and Delhi Police Commissioner Sanjay Arora also attended the ceremony.
