Arrest of Anti-galamsey Protesters: Lawyer descends on the Police, AG and Judiciary over injustie

Private Legal Practitioner, Samsom Lardy Anyenini has descended on the Ghana Police Service, the Attorney General and the Judiciary for breaking the law by using bail as punishment for the anti-galamsey demonstrators.

While sharing his opinion on NewsFile on the “fight on galamsey”, Samson Lardy stated that the Attorney General has used bail against the protesters by refusing them bail after 48 hours according to Article 14 of the constitution.

He mentioned that the police should have processed the Democracy Hub demonstrators bail immediately after they were arrested but went against the law by detaining them for 14 days with the excuse that none of these protesters gave details of their home addresses.

“The police could have processed them for bail immediately after they were arrested but didn’t do so. They are claiming that all these protesters didn’t give their home addresses. It cannot happen that all these people didn’t give their addresses”.

“They kept them in different cells they couldn’t be united to say they gave their addresses. They kept some of them for more than 48 hours, in disregard to Article 14 of the constitution. The AG and the minister for justice took them to court and did them in justice by arguing against bail.”

“The law says, bail should not be used as punishment but it has been used against them. It’s been 14 days since their detention when their charges haven’t been determined”. He schooled the state institutions.
