A devastating crash on the M6 has claimed the lives of two men, a woman and two children, leaving a third child in a critical condition in hospital. The horrific accident occurred just past Tebay Services in Cumbria on the M6 Northbound, with police arriving at the scene around 4.04pm yesterday.

The collision involved two vehicles - a Skoda and a Toyota. Tragically, the driver of the Toyota, a man, a woman and two children from Glasgow all lost their lives at the scene.

A third child, also travelling in the Toyota, was rushed to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle with severe injuries.

National Highways confirmed that two air ambulances attended the scene. The driver of the Skoda, a man from Cambridgeshire, also tragically died at the scene.

Families of those involved in the dreadful accident are receiving support from specially trained officers, police have said. As a result of the crash, the M6 was shut from Junction 36 to Junction 39, with police warning drivers that the road could be "closed for some time", reports the Mirror.

Police confirmed in an appeal that the road remained closed following the crash until the "early hours of this morning", approximately 12 hours after the accident.

Huges queues of traffic formed following the crash, which left the road closed until the early hours of the morning.

An eyewitness has spoken about the massive response on the M6, with reports of "lots of black smoke" billowing from the scene. They took to social media to express their concern: "Something serious happening on M6 northbound, just passed Tebay services. Loads of blue lights going up the hard shoulder, can see lots of black smoke and looks like the air ambulance has just come in as well. I really do hope everyone's ok."

Following the terrifying crash, police are urgently calling for witnesses or anyone with information to come forward.
