Veteran broadcaster John Stapleton has opened up about his Parkinson’s disease diagnosis. The 78 year old, known for his work on Newsnight, Panorama, and GMTV’s News Hour, shared on BBC One’s Morning Live that despite the challenges, he remains "pragmatic" about his condition worsening.

"Speaking is how I’ve earned my living for the best part of 50 years," he explained. "It’s very frustrating sometimes, particularly (when) people are constantly saying to you, ‘Sorry, what did you say? ’ And you have to repeat yourself, time and time again."

"I am fairly pragmatic about the prospect of this getting worse. I try to remain positive, because what’s the point of not being?" His son Nick spoke of the family's heartache but noted the diagnosis was not entirely unexpected due to their grandmother's history with the same degenerative brain condition.

Symptoms of Parkinson’s disease, as outlined by the NHS, include tremors and slow movement. Reflecting on his mother's experience, Stapleton said: "I witnessed my mother’s decline from this lively, ebullient, outgoing lady to a lady who is fairly fragile."

He also shared the practical difficulties she faced, such as opening a can or peeling potatoes, issues he now finds himself grappling with. In a touching moment, Nick discusses future support for his father in the video clip.

Stapleton expressed his desire to maintain his autonomy, stating: "I want to remain as independent as I can for as long as I possibly can." He also conveyed a strong attachment to his home: "In terms of the house, I’d be very reluctant to leave it, which shall not surprise you at all."

He acknowledged to his son the possibility of using a stairlift and his hesitance towards entering care, while also admitting he is "a realist". Parkinson’s UK extended their gratitude and support to Stapleton via a social media post: "A huge thank you to @JohnStapletonTV for his announcement on @BBCMorningLive following his Parkinson’s diagnosis."

They offered solidarity to both John and his son Nick: "We want to offer our support to John and his son, @staplenick, as they start John’s unique journey with the condition."

The charity emphasized that no one faces Parkinson’s alone and stands ready to assist: "No one is alone with Parkinson’s, and we are here to support everyone."

They encouraged those concerned about Parkinson's to seek help: "If you are concerned about yourself, or a loved one, we would encourage you to speak to your GP, or call our free confidential helpline for advice: 0808 800 0303."
