Benwell home explosion claims second life as man's body found in debris
A seven-year-old boy was also killed in the blast in Violet Close
by Sophie Doughty · ChronicleLiveThe huge explosion that ripped through homes in Benwell has claimed a second life.
Police have today confirmed a second body has ben found in the wreckage of what was once flats, in Violet Close. A seven-year-old boy was also killed in the blast, which happened early yesterday morning.
The body, believed to be that of a man in his 30s, was discovered by emergency crews yesterday. Formal identification for both those who died is yet to take place, police have said.
Supt Darren Adams, of Northumbria Police, said: “Our thoughts are very much with the family and friends of the two people who have tragically lost their lives. Specialist officers are supporting their loved-ones and we would urge everyone to respect their privacy at this time.”
Emergency services were called to Violet Close shortly before 1am yesterday. Aerial pictures from the scene show several homes appear to have been completely destroyed.
A number of families were forced to leave their home, and roads surrounding the scene remain closed today
Meanwhile another man, also in his 30s, remains in hospital in a critical condition. Four adults and a child who were also taken to hospital following the explosion have all now been discharged.
Northumbria Police has also confirmed that there have been no reports of missing people related to the incident.
Supt Adams added: “We are working with our partners as our investigation continues. For a number of reasons this is complex and time consuming, not least due to the level of damage which has been caused. As always, we would ask people not to speculate about what has happened both online and within the community.
“As we have previously made clear and I would reiterate now, we are committed to providing answers to what has happened. I would like to thank the community for their continued support and cooperation at this incredibly tragic time.”
