Girl killed after being hit by car on busy London street

A girl has died after being hit by a car on a busy London street, as police question the driver on suspicious of dangerous driving. 

The 18-year-old was crossing the road in Plaistow when an out of control Nissan Juke came hurtling down Barking Road yesterday afternoon. 

Emergency services rushed to help with first crews arriving within two minutes, but the girl was sadly pronounced dead at the scene. 

The driver, a 45-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving, and remains in custody today. 

Officers are now appealing for any witnesses to the tragedy to come forward.

CCTV footage has emerged showing a vehicle ploughing along the pavement beside the A124 at a terrifyingly high speed as pieces of debris can be seen floating into the air. 

The incident took place near Barking Road where a seriously damaged car was pictured with its airbags deployed in front of a local café.

A blue tent was erected at the crash site, and a section of Greengate Street was also cordoned off as police investigated. 

A London Ambulance Service spokesperson said: 'We were called at 3.44pm yesterday to reports of a road traffic collision in Barking Road, Plaistow.

'We sent a number of resources to the scene, including ambulance crews, a paramedic in a fast response car, an incident response officer, members of our Tactical Response Unit and London's Air Ambulance.

'The first of our crews arrived in two minutes.

'Our crews treated two people at the scene, before taking a man to hospital by road, as a priority. Sadly, despite the best efforts of emergency services, a woman died at the scene.'

According to Transport for London, four routes were affected by the crash yesterday evening but they have since reopened.
