Third man arrested after hit-and-run left boy fighting for his life

A third man has been arrested after a car involved in a high-speed police chase smashed into a teenage boy, leaving him fighting for his life in hospital.

West Yorkshire Police were pursuing a vehicle believed to be travelling above the speed limit in Bradford at 8.25pm on Monday evening.

As the patrol car turned to pursue the suspect vehicle on the opposite carriageway, officers lost sight of it.

Officers then located a pedestrian lying in the middle of Halifax Road with his arms outstretched and a severed leg nearby.

The 17-year-old male suffered serious injuries after being hit by the suspect vehicle - which failed to stop at the scene.

Today a third man, aged 24, was arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving.

Yesterday officers arrested two men, both aged 33, in connection with the incident.

One was brought into police custody on suspicion of causing serious injury through dangerous driving and failing to stop at the scene of a collision.

The other was arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender.

All three men remain in police custody.

Grisly video footage from the scene showed a casualty lying in the middle of the road with their arms outstretched.

A severed lower leg was shown just metres away on the street.

Halifax Road was closed while investigations were carried out but has since reopened. 

Photos of the collision scene, which was opposite a Tesco store, showed debris scattered across the road.

West Yorkshire Police said it had voluntarily referred itself to the Independent Office for Police Conduct.
