Much missed Birmingham cafe to reopen after five years serving food from 'Brummy legends'

by · Birmingham Live

A Birmingham city centre cafe that has been closed since March 2020 is finally set to reopen to the public this week with an all new menu. The Tearoom at the Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery, which did reopen briefly for the Commonwealth Games in the summer of 2022, will welcome diners back on Thursday, October 24, alongside the gallery.

The Edwardian tearoom is a vast space with high vaulted ceilings, tiled flooring and a glass panelled roof. It has a mix of cosy sofa seating, high stools and tables with dozens of seats for visitors.

Birmingham Museums has revealed it is working with city bakery Shokupan on its new range of 'sando' sandwiches. Shokupan was previously known as Gupshup when it sold its doorstep-sized sandwiches at the Great Western Arcade and it now trades at Grand Central.

Shokupan is Hokkaido milk bread, thicker cut and slightly sweeter than regular white bread. Birmingham Museums calls its new catering partners 'Brummy legends' in its new menu.

There are eight new sandos on the menu at the Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery with fillings including chicken balti, coronation chickpeas, Lashford sausage melt, chicken katsu, fish fingers and Tomago egg and Kewpie mayonnaise. They're priced from £8.95 and you can add chunky chips to your order for £3.50.

Children's sando meal deals, including a Fruit Shoot and crisps, are £4.95 and there's a choice of egg mayo or peanut butter and jelly.

Muffins and doughnuts are available from £2.50 while cakes, tray bakes and slices are priced at £3.50. A pot of tea is £2.80 and there's a range of tea options to choose from.

Coffees are priced from £2 while hot chocolate is £3.20, with syrups, cream and marshmallows incurring an extra charge.

For Brummies hoping to visit the museum but that want to take their own lunch, there's a picnic area upstairs. There's also a break out area in the new Wild City family and children exhibition, complete with a coffee manchine.
