Liam Payne fans’ call for a new law after the 31-year-old's tragic death last week is set to be debated in Parliament after the campaign hits 100k signatures. The ITV The X Factor star died in a tragic fall from a Buenos Aires hotel balcony last week.

His family’s MP, Tory Mike Wood, said: “Liam’s passing is yet another reminder that anybody can suffer from poor mental health, no matter how famous or successful. If other families can be spared grief because the industry becomes more aware of the need to support artists then I hope it might bring some comfort.”

The Department for Culture, Media and Sport headed by Lisa Nandy, said: “We are very open to discussions, if and when raised, on how artists’ mental health can be better safeguarded. The Government is committed to recruiting 8,500 mental health workers to provide faster treatment.”

The petition explains: "The entertainment industry, acclaimed for its glamour and stardom, is equally infamous for the enormous pressure it exerts on the mental health of artists. Resultant issues such as stress, anxiety, depression, substance misuse and even suicide are alarmingly high. According to research, performers are 2-3 times more likely to suffer from these issues compared to the general population.

"In recent news of Liam Payne's tragic death as many others, the entertainment industry needs to be held accountable and be responsible to the welfare of their artists. We seek to implore lawmakers to create legislation safeguarding the mental health of artists within the industry."

Sharon Osbourne, a judge on The X Factor, paid tribute to the West Bromwich Albion fan last week and wrote in a heartbreaking and tragic tribute on social media that it is evident that Payne was "let down" by the music industry.

The 72-year-old music manager shared a photo of the singer on Instagram, captioning it, “Liam, my heart aches. We all let you down. Where was this industry when you needed them? You were just a kid when you entered one of the toughest industries in the world. Who was in your corner? Rest in peace my friend @‌liampayne (sic)."
