Matty Healy makes sly Taylor Swift dig and says 'I’m just not interested'

by · Birmingham Live

Matty Healy seemingly had a sly dig at Taylor Swift as he discussed his approach to song writing and said he 'wasn't interested' in writing songs about flings. The 1975 frontman briefly dated the singer last year and many fans suspected tracks from her latest album, The Tortured Poets Department, hinted at their short-lived romance.

Although Taylor is now with Kansas City Chiefs star Travis Kelce, Matty - who got engaged to singer Gabbriette earlier this year - appeared to throw a jab at Love Story singer during an appearance on Joshua Citarella’s Doomscroll Podcast, the Mirror reports.

He said: "If I made a record about, I don’t know, all the stuff that was said about me, or my casual romantic liaisons, or my, whatever it may be, that I’ve kind of become known for, just because I was famous. I think that’s an obvious thing to draw from."

Matty, whose mum is Loose Women star Denise Welch, continued: "I’m just not interested in it. And I think that the maintenance of the status quo is something that I always fight against. So the idea of making a record about something that personally happened to me, that by the time I put it out is going to be like, two years old.”

He added: "I see people doing that as well, and it’s just not interesting. My work is, I hope, interesting art pop that provokes, that maybe helps popularise academic subjects that I’m really interested in.”

Taylor appeared to shine a light on why she and Matty didn't work out with a series of cryptic lyrics in her album. The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived suggested she was ghosted by the singer. "Was any of it true? Gazing at me starry-eyed in your Jehovah's Witness suit," she sang. "Who the f*** was that guy? You tried to buy some pills from a friend of friends of mine. They just ghosted you. Now you know what it feels like."

Fans believed the song alluded to Matty as he is famous for performing on stage in a suit. He has previously opened up on his own battles with substance abuse.
