Sandbox VR in Grand Central

The 'mind-bending horrors' above Birmingham New Street station I'm not brave enough to face

by · Birmingham Live

I like to think of myself as a pretty scrappy girl. Few things frighten me and I can't say that I have a particular phobia that might prove to be my undoing.

But even with the best will in the world, there are 'mind-bending horrors' above New Street Station that I'd have to really dig deep to find the courage to tackle. Let me explain.

A few months ago I walked up The Ramp, past McDonald's and into the most realistic VR experience I've ever had. At Sandbox VR, the attraction just inside Grand Central, I worked up a sweat fighting dragons with my pal and I worked, hard, and not falling out with him forever when he turned coat during that Squid Game round where you rely on your pals to keep you safe from falling to your 'death'.

Unlike a lot of other VR experiences I've had in town, Sandbox put sensors on my wrists, ankles, chest and head and my movements in game matched my exact movements in real life. With your headset on, you have the run of the room, so you're moving, rushing and roaming around in the real world to navigate your digital self around the virtual one.

It makes for an extremely realistic experience, probably the most transporative gaming session I've ever had.

Fighting dragons is one thing, battling your pals in a 'Red Light Green Light' round is too. But now Sandbox VR has announced that it is launching its 'most terrifying virtual reality experience' and I'm not sure I can face it.

PHOBIA is the third instalment of the zombie series Deadwood and, judging by how realistic I know it can all feel, I've got the willies just thinking about it. In it, you're transported, virtually, to a 'derelict medical facility' which, in itself, sounds terrifying.

The idea of the facility is that it was designed to treat patients' fears through exposure therapy, but that it's 'now crawling with unprecedented, mind-bending horrors, surrounding guests in 360° nightmares'. Yikes.

The 'psychological horror experience' launches on October 16 and I just don't think I'm brave enough to take it on. The city has a number of scare attractions coming up for halloween, including that Scare Maze down at Luna Springs that I took on (and beat!) last year.

But of all the spooky things (even the Alton Towers mazes where they're allowed to touch you!), the Sandbox VR one is the one that intimidates me the most!
