Police have spoken out over Liam Payne's tragic death in Argentina. Cops in the South American country were caalled to a Buenos Aires hotel before the One Direction star's death after reports of an "aggressive man", they have said.

They say they were told by hotel staff the man "could be under influence of drugs and alcohol". 31-year-old Payne was acting erratically and had to be escorted back to his hotel room before he plunged to his death - with hotel workers making a panicked call to police.

Witnesses told local media Liam 'had been acting erratically in the hotel lobby and smashed his laptop' before he 'had to be carried back to his room'. Police had received a call from a worker at the hotel urgently requesting help with an intoxicated guest, according to audio related to the case obtained from the Buenos Aires security ministry.

"When he is conscious he is destroying the entire room and we need you to send someone," the worker said. Payne was found dead in a hotel courtyard on Wednesday night. The hotel is located on Costa Rica Street in Buenos Aires’s Palermo neighborhood, local authorities revealed.

Earlier this month, Payne reportedly shared a Snapchat saying he was traveling to Argentina in part to see his former bandmate Niall Horan play a show there. Buenos Aires police said in a statement Payne died after he fell from a hotel balcony on the third floor. Pablo Policicchio, the communications director for the Buenos Aires Security Ministry, told the Associated Press the singer “had jumped from the balcony of his room.”

Police received a call just after 5 pm local time over an “aggressive man who could be under the influence of drugs or alcohol,” Policicchio told the outlet. The hotel manager told police that there was “a guest who is overwhelmed with drugs and alcohol.”

“He’s destroying the entire room and, well, we need you to send someone, please,” the manager said, according to call audio obtained by the Associated Press. He suffered “extremely serious injuries” and medics pronounced him dead on the spot, the Associated Press reports.
