A woman who had an hour long chat with Liam Payne before he died was "shocked" by what she heard, she has revealed. Liam, the One Direction star who hails from Wolverhampton, shot to fame on ITV The X Factor before becoming a worldwide star.

He tragically died at a hotel in Buenos Aires in Argentina this week, aged 31. And a fan who chatted to him at the South American hotel this week said Payne as "desperate" to be recognised, claiming he announced himself unprompted.

He shouted "I'm Liam", to a queue of guests waiting for lift, who weren't "bothered" about who he was. She said that Liam returned to the lobby with his laptop and was using the "accessibility setting" that narrated the emails he was checking, for "the attention".

Guest Rebecca said: "Suddenly he took the computer, shouted 'f**k this s**t mate!' and started bashing the computer on the ground." The singer's "out of place" behaviour "shocked" onlookers in the "high-end" hotel.

Rebecca said she asked him if he was OK. She explained: "But he just kind of grunted. Then he said 'I used to be in a boyband. That's why I'm so f**ked up'." She saw him get back in the lift, before a "British guy" apologised to the group on "his behalf", saying Liam "gets so high" sometimes.

The witness said she appeared to be on drugs, and was acting in an "aggressive" way, but not towards anyone. Paying tribute after his death, Harry Styles wrote: "I am truly devastated by Liam's passing.

"His greatest joy was making other people happy, and it was an honour to be alongside him as he did it. Liam lived wide open, with his heart on his sleeve, he had an energy for life that was infectious. He was warm, supportive, and incredibly loving.

"The years we spent together will forever remain among the most cherished years of my life. I will miss him always, my lovely friend. My heart breaks for Karen, Geoff, Nicola and Ruth, his son Bear, and all those around the world who knew and loved him, as I did."
