Bethesda is shutting down The Elder Scrolls Legends, and has delisted the game from Steam. The free-to-play card game will remain online into early 2025, when it will become completely inaccessible. Originally launched in 2017, the CCG was put “on hold” in 2019, with no updates since. While you can’t download the game on Valve’s storefront anymore, there’s still a ray of hope if you want to take Legends for a spin before it’s gone forever.

With Magic The Gathering Arena, Hearthstone, Yu-Gi-Oh! Master Duel, and now Pokemon TCG Pocket already dominating the card game market, The Elder Scrolls Legends was always a tough proposition. Pre-established virtual TCGs have a much easier time, and Legends was fighting an uphill battle against the competition. With eight expansions under its belt in two years though, Legends started out strong. That couldn’t last forever, sadly, and after the game was put on hiatus a few years ago, it’s finally coming to an end.

“The Elder Scrolls Legends servers will permanently shut down on January 30, 2025,” a new in-game message reads. “From now until January 30, 2025, all items in the store and entry into in-game events will be available for one gold each, so you can enjoy all the content Legends has to offer. On that date, servers will be shut down and the game will be inaccessible. Thank you for playing and we hope you enjoyed your time in Legends.”

Alongside Steam, Legends was also launched on macOS, iOS, and Android devices. As of publication, I was still able to download and play the game on mobile. So if you fancy taking Elder Scrolls Legends for a spin before the imminent shutdown, you can easily do so on your phone.

In 2019, Bethesda announced it was putting The Elder Scrolls Legends “on hold.” All new content was halted “for the foreseeable future,” but servers would remain live. Five years later, that promise is coming to an end. Since that announcement, the Steam playerbase of Legends has slowly dwindled, struggling to get near 1,000 concurrent players.

Bethesda has now delisted The Elder Scrolls Legends from the Steam store, and an in-game message confirms that the servers will shut down on Thursday January 30, 2025.
