‘The Devil’s Bath,’ From ‘Goodnight Mommy’ Directors, Sets Limited Theatrical Release From Shudder (EXCLUSIVE)

Horror streamer Shudder is giving a limited North American theatrical run to Veronika Franz and Severin Fiala‘s latest horror feature, “The Devil’s Bath.”

Per the official logline: “In 1750 Austria, a deeply religious woman named Agnes has just married her beloved, but her mind and heart soon grow heavy as her life becomes a long list of chores and expectations. Day after day, she is increasingly trapped in a murky and lonely path leading to evil thoughts, until the possibility of committing a shocking act of violence seems like the only way out of her inner prison.”

Fifteen screenings are planned across the U.S., with showtimes in California, New York, Colorado, Illinois, North Carolina, New Jersey, Texas and Virginia. The California and New York screenings will be hosted at Alamo Drafthouse theaters and will feature post-screening Q&As with Franz and Fiala.

In a sitdown with Variety, Fiala explained that the story for “The Devil’s Bath” arose after he and Franz discovered an episode of “This American Life” with historian Kathy Stuart, which touched on famous examples of loopholes in otherwise ironclad sets of rules.

“She was talking about a loophole in history, how it was a way of committing suicide that religion wouldn’t forbid, and that’s by killing someone else,” Fiala said. “Before your execution, you could still repent your sins and go to heaven. So that’s what a lot of people did, and it was shocking to us that we had never heard about this phenomenon that was widely common all over Europe. So that was the first inspiration.”

The pair’s other film credits include “Goodnight Mommy” and “The Lodge.”
