Finn Wolfhard, Billy Bryk to Reteam With Producer Jason Reitman for ‘Idle Hands’ Remake at Sony (EXCLUSIVE)

by · Variety

Finn Wolfhard and Billy Bryk have signed on to write a reimagining of the 1999 horror comedy film “Idle Hands” for Sony Pictures that Jason Reitman will produce.

Wolfhard and Bryk also are being eyed to direct the new “Idle Hands,” following the sale of their festival hit “Hell of a Summer,” which they co-wrote, co-directed, co-starred in and produced. In August, Neon acquired horror-comedy “Hell of a Summer,” which debuted at the Toronto Film Festival in 2023, garnering critical acclaim for the duo. The indie distributor behind horror breakout “Longlegs” plans to release the film in summer 2025.

“Idle Hands” marks a reteaming for the duo and Reitman, who worked with Wolfhard and Bryk on two “Ghostbusters” films and “Saturday Night” for Sony Pictures. Reitman is producing alongside Jennifer Todd and Suzanne Todd via their Team Todd banner. Gil Kenan also will produce, while Maia Eyre is overseeing the project at Sony.

“Finn and Billy crushed their directorial debut and have a completely original take on ‘Idle Hands’ that captures a disaffected generation,” Reitman says. “We are excited to support them as they bring their unique take to the screen and summon the demons.”

The original film, which was released in 1999 and starred Devon Sawa and Jessica Alba, centers on a teenage slacker whose hand becomes possessed with murderous intent. Finn, who stars in “Stranger Things,” and Bryk are committed to breathing new life into the teen movie and keeping it authentic to the demographic. At the 2023 edition of TIFF, Wolfard told Variety: “Our No. 1 conversation was how annoying it is to see new teen movies and how badly our age group is represented.”

Wolfhard is repped by CAA, Venture Entertainment Partners and Jackoway Austen. Bryk is handled by Mosaic, Oscars Abrams Zimel & Associates and attorney Steve Warren.
