‘Harry Potter’ Series Will Explore Books ‘More In-Depth’ Than Films, Says Warner Bros. TV Boss Channing Dungey

by · Variety

While the upcoming “Harry Potter” TV series may be mostly shrouded in a cloak of invisibility while the show is being carefully developed, the head of TV at Warner Bros. offered a few morsels of information.

Speaking at Mipcom in Cannes, Channing Dungey who serves as Warner Bros. TV Group‘s chairman and CEO, said that the “writing staff was in place and they’re doing what they need to do, and casting calls have opened up in the U.K. and Ireland, so the process is moving along.”

Dungey added that working with the “Harry Potter” universe was an “unbelievable dream, honestly, and as somebody who is a huge fan of the books, the opportunity to get to explore them in a little bit more in-depth that you can in just a two-hour film… that’s the whole reason we’re on this journey.”

Dungey was speaking in a fireside chat with Variety‘s co-editor-in-chief Cynthia Littleton, part of Variety‘s “C-Suite Conversations” on the first day of the TV trade show.

Along the upcoming Potter series, the Warner Bros. senior exec also touched on another show that has been source of rumours and speculation: season 4 of “Ted Lasso.”

Variety confirmed in August that the return of the hit comedy was on the verge of being greenlit, with Warner Bros. Television having picked up the options on original cast members Hannah Waddingham, Brett Goldstein and Jeremy Swift.

“We are in conversations about season four, and they are very exciting conversations, but it’s still early days,” said Dungey, who also hinted at a major returning name who had — as yet — not been confirmed.

“We had always been clear that we there wasn’t going to be more ‘Ted Lasso’ if Jason [Sudeikis] and team weren’t feeling excited about it, and I can tell you firsthand that he’s in a place where he’s feeling really excited and feels good about it”
