Warning - this article contains major spoilers for Only Murders in the Building season 4.

Only Murders in the Building fans have admitted to feeling rather let down by the latest madcap mystery in New York.

In the fourth outing on Disney+, Mabel Mora (played by Selena Gomez), Charles-Haden Savage (Steve Martin) and Oliver Putnam (Martin Short) are investigating the mysterious death of Charles’ stunt double Sazz Pataki (Jane Lynch).

However, their investigation hits several roadblocks this time around as their successful podcast is being adapted into a Hollywood movie, with Eugene Levy, Zach Galifianakis and Eva Longoria portraying their on-screen counterparts.

Meanwhile, their first slew of suspects, a strange group of tenants from the other side of the Arconia, are involved in another mystery involving a dead film professor.

Wannabe writer Marshall was revealed as the killer

The last episode of the season, which was released on Disney+ this Tuesday (October 29), revealed the killer was none other than the movie’s screenwriter Marshall P Pope (Jin Ha).

Mabel finds herself trapped with the wannabe writer, who’s actually revealed to be one-time stunt performer Rex Bailey who befriended Sazz and stole her script for the Only Murders movie.

As is tradition, the season concluded with another shocking murder - this time, the building’s doorman Lester (Teddy Coluca) was found dead in the courtyard fountain following an intriguing request from a woman named Sofia Caccimelio (Téa Leoni).

Despite the twists and turns, many viewers couldn’t help feeling somewhat let down by this latest escapade.

One fan said on Reddit: “With the Season [4], finale is anyone else just a tiny bit disappointed with how a little underwhelming it was? Just a little bit.”

Although they admitted the latest outing had a “strong start”, they felt “the writers were trying to rush ahead to prepare for the last scenes of the season which would lead into Season 5 which is where everything will tie together.

“I don’t think the bajillion celebrity cameos helped either,” they added.

A second viewer pointed out another glaring shortcoming in the final scenes: “Also maybe an unpopular opinion but Jan (Amy Ryan) swooping in to save the day felt suuuuper convenient and pretty lazy.

“She was just hanging out in the passages that whole time? No one thought to look for her there? And she happened to shoot Marshall with impeccable aim and timing from across the courtyard?”

Fans were baffled by the sudden return of Jan

Someone else replied: “I know this may not be a popular comment, but I was pretty disappointed with season 4 and underwhelmed with the murder plot... I guessed the killer before the finale that says a lot about the weak plot.”

Fans reacting to the series on X (formerly Twitter) had the same complaint, with one writing: “I’m just going to say it, the season finale of Only Murders in the Building was really disappointing. Season as a whole was great but that finale just wasn’t very good in my opinion.”

And another said: “Personally found this season disappointing. Too many star vehicle turns whose journeys were ultimately more cul-de-sacs than red herrings.

“Unsatisfying, penultimate, and finale #OMITB episodes, and the murderer resolution a stretch.”

But they did admit: “Though the final Sazz scene was sweet, & Oliver getting married and being happy warms my soul, cos, adore Martin Short.”
