Liam Payne's fans have called for a memorial to be erected in the star's home town after his tragic death last week.

The One Direction heartthrob, 31, left 'Directioners' around the world inconsolable when he fell from the third floor of his hotel suite in Argentina. Following the shocking news, fans in South America flocked to the Casa Sur Hotel to leave candles and cards for the star. And, now, Liam's fans want a permanent reminder of the singer in Wolverhampton.

More than 2,500 people have signed a petition calling on the council to consider building a permanent monument in the West Midlands. Their appeal page reads: "The recent passing of Liam Payne has touched the hearts of many, not just the unbreakable community of One Direction fans, but people worldwide. As individuals who have been profoundly impacted by the loss of this amazing talent, we ask for a permanent structure or mural to be erected in Wolverhampton in his honour."

It continues: "Liam Payne's artistry has reached out and touched countless lives. His music was a harmonious blend of inspiration and comfort that resonated in the hearts of millions. His life and legacy deserve to be commemorated in a way that is as enduring as the light he imparted unto the world. By erecting a permanent structure in Wolverhampton, we are ensuring that Liam Payne is remembered for generations to come."

The petition's organisers say they would like city officials to create a memorial, which is suited to Liam's personality. They added: "We propose that the city, partnered with local artists, can create a memorial that reflects the spirit and essence of Liam Payne - his roots, his musical journey, and his incredible contribution to the international music community. This act of remembrance can provide comfort and solace to those who have been touched by his life and passing."

It comes after fans also called for a new 'Liam's Law' to protect the mental health of young pop stars. After a petition received more than 110,000 signatures, the prospect will be discussed in parliament.

The proposed law would ensure young musicians get regular mental health check-ups, "adequate rest periods", mental health professionals on set and ongoing support throughout their career.

Launched anonymously on October 18 by a fan named Day KV on Change.org, the petition states: "The entertainment industry must be held accountable and take responsibility for the well-being of its artists. Resultant issues such as stress, anxiety, depression, substance misuse and even suicide are alarmingly high."

Liam's family are still waiting to repatriate his body as toxicology tests continue. The star's devastated dad, Geoff, flew out to Argentina as soon as he heard the tragic news and is understandably desperate to bring his boy home "where he belongs".
