Strictly Come Dancing chaos as sick Amy Dowden misses results show and dance off
Amy Dowden was rushed to hospital after her performance on Saturday and is awol from BBC show tonight
by Mark Jefferies · The MirrorStrictly Come Dancing bosses faced show chaos after Amy Dowden collapsed backstage and was rushed to hospital - meaning she missed tonight's results show.
Shortly after Saturday night's main show was recorded they made an emergency 999 call when Amy, 34, needed urgent medical treatment. Viewers tonight will notice she was not in the results show, causing panic backstage as crew worried for her health and also realised she would not be able to take part in any potential dance off.
A BBC spokesman said: "Due to unforeseen circumstances, Amy Dowden MBE was unable to be in tonight’s results show." A source went on to insist that Amy's wellbeing was "number one priority" along with the other contestants. But referring to the competition the source added: "The outcome of the results show has not been compromised by this unforeseen matter and the show has protocols in place for circumstances such as these."
As Mirror online reported earlier today, an ambulance was needed to take Amy to hospital. A spokesman for Amy said: "Amy was feeling unwell and so an ambulance was called as a precaution. She is feeling much better and would like to thank the Strictly family for their love and concern. We request Amy's privacy in matters of health is kindly respected."
And an East of England Ambulance Service spokesman said: "We were called just after 9pm on Saturday to attend a medical emergency at Elstree Studios in Borehamwood. An ambulance was sent to the scene. One patient, an adult female, was transported to Barnet Hospital for further care."
Earlier Amy and JB Gill glided their way to a score of 32 with their foxtrot to Dancing In The Moonlight by Toploader. Judge Anton Du Beke thought it was a "super duper performance" while Craig Revel Horwood thought Gill could have gone further with the scarecrow character.
The pair also posted a video looking happy and smiley on instagram. Amy said: "We have just come off! We don't want to be in the bottom two. If you are enjoying our Strictly journey please vote for us."
But later in the evening the mood changed backstage and she was not able to continue on the show and required urgent medical attention. She would also not have been able to take part in the dance off. Worried fans are now hoping Amy will be fit and able to continue for the remainder of the series with JB after the struck up such a great partnership to mark her return to the show.
Amy had been so thrilled to return to Strictly full time this series after her cancer struggles. Speaking in August, she told Prima: “Strictly has changed everything, from the opportunities it’s given me – I’ve got to do tours, travel the world, buy a house, open a dance studio – to the people it’s brought into my life... I’ve been in life-or-death situations, so dancing a one-minute-30-second routine for entertainment isn’t quite the same as walking into chemotherapy.”
The Welsh professional dancer, 33, was too ill to compete in last year's series of the BBC competition after she was diagnosed with stage three breast cancer last May and underwent a mastectomy. After her health check in March revealed "no evidence of disease", she set her sights on getting back to the dancefloor and was given a partner in the new series to make a full comeback
Appearing on BBC Breakfast in March Amy had said: "This is the longest I've never danced for since May so I need to get my body back into it. And obviously, my body's been through so much with chemo so it's building up gradually. But I have missed it so much. I used to go and support them and it was bittersweet.
"I was supporting my best friends but I didn't want anything more than to be on that dancefloor. It was so cruel. So that's the aim, is that they'll have me back, to be back on that dancefloor with my best friends doing what I love most later this year."
At the start of the new series last month bosses even organised a special dance to celebrate Amy's return. A stunning quickstep routine marked her comeback with Amy "front and centre" as she dazzled the audience, alongside her fellow Professional Dancers.
At the time Amy said: Amy said: “I am so excited for every element of being back with my Strictly family. I am so grateful to get this opportunity, especially as it’s such a special year for this legendary show. It feels like it’s my first year again. I’m buzzing to see the whole team, for costumes, for dance routines, to meet the celebrities, the judges. Everyone’s laughing at me because I am just smiling constantly. I’d like to dedicate this dance to my pink sisters who have supported me through the past year and to all those currently facing cancer."
