Big Brother housemates left 'traumatised' by noisy alarm causing them sleep deprivation

The sleep-deprived Big Brother housemates are being kept awake by producers sounding an alarm that has left one contestant "a little bit traumatised" after being evicted

The Big Brother contestants have been left “traumatised” by an Orwellian nightmare.

ITV2 bosses cranked up tensions in the house by depriving the housemates of sleep, leaving them all “wired and out of it”.

The group are getting just a few hours before Big Brother pumps the bedroom with headache-inducing floodlights - and then sounds an alarm so powerful a former contestant has been left “a little bit traumatised”.

The lack of sleep is leaving everyone “irritable”, says evictee Daze - one of few in the house who knew the concept of the show came from George Orwell’s novel 1984.

“They would tell you off over the microphone if you tried to nap during the day,” she reveals. “And then they would play a shrill alarm so loudly it was uncomfortable - you would get up just so it stops.”

She’s already endured a horrible flashback to it. “I heard an alarm that was similar when I was out for lunch with my mum and my heart was pumping,” she says, adding she is a “little bit traumatised”.

There are no clocks in the Big Brother house, but Daze says the housemates have a vague idea of what time it is. “You go to sleep extremely late,” she says. “I think it was 6am one night. Then in the morning they turn on bright studio lights, like floodlights, which wake you up. In that daytime, you’re slightly wired and out of it.”

Daze took to meditating instead - “though not in bed, because they would think I was sleeping”, and that would set off the dreaded alarm... But she shrugs that she knew to expect some trauma-inducing activities. “Most people [in the house] didn’t know that Big Brother was based on George Orwell’s dystopian novel,” she laughs. “When I mentioned it in the house they went, ‘Oh, what’s that?’”

In fairness, most of the housemates weren’t even born by 1984 - let alone when it was written. This week's evictee was Izaaz, who said his time in the house was "quite hard" as he missed his family.
