Professional dancer Amy Dowden has been flooded with support from fans after it has been confirmed she's had to pull out of Strictly Come Dancing following her health scare
by Mia O'Hare · The MirrorStrictly Come Dancing professional Amy Dowden has taken a break from the competition following a health scare this weekend.
The dancer, 34, has been temporarily replaced for rehearsals after she was hospitalitalised following the weekend show. Amy, who is partnered with JLS star JB Gill for the current series of Strictly, was absent from the results show following her collapse backstage just moments after the live episode aired on BBC One.
Strictly colleague Lauren Oakley, 33, has been stepping in for Amy so JB can carry on his rehearsals. During Monday night's episode of Strictly spin-off It Takes Two, Amy's co-stars addressed her absence.
Host Fleur East read a statement from the BBC that read: ""Amy Dowden MBE is doing much better and the Strictly family send her love and wish her well. She is delighted that fellow Professional Dancer, Lauren Oakley, is able to step in for rehearsals and to perform in Saturday's show for JB Gill's Couple's Choice dance. We are all hopeful that Amy will be back to dance with JB next week."
Fans rushed to share their support to Amy as one said: "Get better soon Amy!" Another added: "Get well soon, Amy, or should I say Amy Dowden MBE, as they just specified on #ItTakesTwo." Someone else commented: "How sad that Amy misses JB’s couple’s choice." A fourth wrote: "Poor wee Amy, hope she is getting lots of rest. She's my favourite, she's the bravest of them all."
Amy's celebrity dance partnerJBthanked the public for their support on Sunday, hours on from her health scare. OnInstagram, the JLS singer penned: "On behalf of both @amy_dowden and I, I just want to say a huge thank you to everyone for voting for us and wishing us well. We absolutely loved our performance on Saturday night and are so grateful to be through to another week on @bbcstrictly Thank you, thank you, thank you for your support."
On Sunday, Amy's spokesperson said: "Amy was feeling unwell and so an ambulance was called as a precaution. She is feeling much better and would like to thank the Strictly family for their love and concern. We request Amy’s privacy in matters of health is kindly respected."
It came after JB was seen standing alone during Sunday night's pre-recorded Results Show. The BBC added that "due to unforeseen circumstances" Amy was "unable" to be part of the episode, which is recorded on Saturday after the live show. An East of England Ambulance Service spokesman said: "We were called just after 9pm on Saturday to attend a medical emergency at Elstree Studios in Borehamwood. An ambulance was sent to the scene. One patient, an adult female, was transported to Barnet Hospital for further care."
Amy returned to the Strictly Come Dancing this year after undergoing treatment for breast cancer, including having a mastectomy and chemotherapy. The Welsh dancer had found a lump in her breast while on honeymoon with her professional dancer husband Ben Jones.
She was diagnosed with stage three breast cancer and, following treatment, in February she announced that tests showed she has "no evidence of disease". Amy allowed fans to follow her cancer treatment after seeing the impact her speaking openly could have on others as part of her series Strictly Amy: Crohn’s And Me.
The Strictly star spoke about her Crohn's diagnosis and met other people with the disease to hear about their experiences. Crohn's is a lifelong condition, in which parts of the digestive system become inflamed, can cause stomach aches and cramps, fatigue and diarrhoea, among other symptoms, according to the NHS website. During the Strictly live tour in 2022, Amy was admitted to hospital in Manchester following a Crohn’s flare-up.
