Ellis is about to air on Channel 5 and the series stars Sharon D Clarke as the title character, with Andrew Gower playing her right-hand man, DS Harper.

The 35-year-old English actor is best known for playing Cutler in Being Human and Prince Charles Stuart in Outlander.

He was born in Merseyside and it was in Year Nine at school that he started taking an interest in drama.

His TV debut was in 2011, when he starred in ITV's medical drama Monroe, and he went above and beyond to research the role of trainee heart surgeon Dr Andrew Mullery.

Andrew watched two coronary artery bypass surgeries while standing next to actual surgeons.

Away from his acting career, the star is also a talented musician and in 2005 he formed the Manchester-based rock band Emerson.

He was the band's lead vocalist with his friend Michael Collins on the keyboard and James Webster on guitar.

However, when he left to attend the Oxford School of Drama, he was forced to put his music career on hold.

He intended to get the band back together at a later time but prioritised his acting.

Back in 2013 he spoke to the Liverpool Echo about his love of the Beatles and performing at the Cavern.

He said: "I’m obsessed, really obsessed, with The Beatles. I’m such a huge fan so playing the Cavern was amazing.

“Obviously the acting is keeping me busy at the moment, but I just love writing songs and that buzz of gigging and, with the internet, we can still do a lot of stuff and work on songs wherever we are.”

He went on to form a new band, Gustaffson, with Webster. In January this year they completed recording on their debut album, Black & White Movie.

Ellis airs on Channel 5 on Thursday at 8pm
