Strictly Come Dancing fans have spotted what they believe is a “new curse” for the celebrity contestants after JB Gill and Amy Dowden end up in the dreaded dance-off.

The JLS singer and his professional dance partner were in the bottom two for the first time on Sunday night, alongside former footballer Paul Merson and his partner Karen Hauer. Judges Craig Revel Horwood, Motsi Mabuse and Anton Du Beke voted to save JB and Amy, and viewers breathed a sigh of relief when the verdict was announced, meaning the much-loved duo will be performing in the show’s legendary Halloween week.

But some fans claimed there was a new curse that was haunting contestants on Strictly, as they figured out a link between the dance-off and the timing of the couples’ performances. Taking to Twitter, some suggested that JB and Amy were in the bottom two because they were the first couple to dance on Saturday night’s show. Concerned viewers also said that Shayne Ward ended up in the dance-off alongside Nick Knowles after performing first on the show earlier this month.

“Crazy how JB danced first last night and in the dance off, and Shayne ward danced first last week and too himself there. Going first is a curse lol,” one mused, as another fan added: “Ooh that's a bit of a shock, but I think sometimes opening the show can put you in a risky position. Easy to forget the first couple especially if they fall in the middle of the leaderboard.” Craig noted that JB and Amy were in the danger zone as they were in the middle of the leaderboard after performing a jive on Saturday’s show, and it seems fans agreed with the sharp-tongued judge.

“Going first is a proper curse this series,” a third chimed in, as another added: “Voters with goldfish memories yet again. Two weeks in a row. The curse of first.” Many were gobsmacked when Tess announced JB and Amy were in the dance-off, as the couple were predicted to be favourites to lift the Glitterball trophy. “JB and AMY?!?! In the bottom 2? What’s going on?” one shocked fan tweeted, as another added: “What the actual F. JB and Amy should be nowhere near the dance off. #Strictly.”

The couple were awarded 30 points for their jive to OutKast’s hit Hey Ya, and fans were stunned when they were at risk of leaving the competition. “JB and Amy don’t deserve to be KastOut for that jive. Hopefully they won’t suffer from being first. #Strictly #StrictlyComeDancing,” one wrote, as one furious fan added: “How on earth were JB & Amy in the dance - off?? It was one of the best dances on Saturday night!”

Others suggested there were couples still in the competition, including those at the bottom of the leaderboard, who deserved to be in the bottom two over JB and Amy. “JB and Amy in the dance off (over at least 3 or 5 others). The actual Hell voting public?! #StrictlyComeDancing,” one fumed, as another wrote: “JB AND AMY! WHAT? Wow shocked at that.”
