Only Murders in the Building fans 'disappointed' by season 4 ending as they all issue the same complaint

Warning - this article contains spoilers for Only Murders in the Building season 4.

Fans of Only Murders in the Building have expressed disappointment with the latest bizarre mystery set in New York.

In the fourth series on Disney+, Mabel Mora (played by Selena Gomez), Charles-Haden Savage (Steve Martin) and Oliver Putnam (Martin Short) are delving into the enigmatic death of Charles' stunt double Sazz Pataki (Jane Lynch).

However, their investigation encounters numerous obstacles as their successful podcast is being transformed into a Hollywood film, featuring Eugene Levy, Zach Galifianakis and Eva Longoria as their on-screen equivalents.

Simultaneously, their initial list of suspects, an odd group of tenants from the other side of the Arconia, are entangled in another mystery surrounding a deceased film professor, reports the Mirror.

The final episode of the season, which premiered on Disney+ this Tuesday (October 29), unveiled that the murderer was none other than the film's scriptwriter Marshall P Pope (Jin Ha).

Mabel finds herself cornered with the aspiring writer, who is actually revealed to be former stunt performer Rex Bailey who befriended Sazz and pilfered her script for the Only Murders film.

As per tradition, the season wrapped up with another shocking murder - this time, the building's doorman Lester (Teddy Coluca) was discovered dead in the courtyard fountain following a mysterious request from a woman named Sofia Caccimelio (Tea Leoni).

Despite the series' dramatic developments, a sense of disappointment was palpable among viewers following the latest episode.

A Reddit user expressed their feelings: "With the Season [4], finale is anyone else just a tiny bit disappointed with how a little underwhelming it was? Just a little bit."

They acknowledged the season's "strong start" but criticised the pacing, suggesting "the writers were trying to rush ahead to prepare for the last scenes of the season which would lead into Season 5 which is where everything will tie together."

The same fan also noted that "I don't think the bajillion celebrity cameos helped either," indicating that these appearances might have detracted from the story.

Another viewer highlighted a different issue with the climax: "Also maybe an unpopular opinion but Jan (Amy Ryan) swooping in to save the day felt suuuuper convenient and pretty lazy."

They questioned the plausibility of her actions: "She was just hanging out in the passages that whole time? No one thought to look for her there? And she happened to shoot Marshall with impeccable aim and timing from across the courtyard?"

Adding to the criticism, another comment read: "I know this may not be a popular comment, but I was pretty disappointed with season 4 and underwhelmed with the murder plot... I guessed the killer before the finale that says a lot about the weak plot."

On X (formerly Twitter), fans echoed similar sentiments, with one stating: "I'm just going to say it, the season finale of Only Murders in the Building was really disappointing. Season as a whole was great but that finale just wasn't very good in my opinion."

Another viewer expressed disappointment, commenting: "Personally found this season disappointing. Too many star vehicle turns whose journeys were ultimately more cul-de-sacs than red herrings."

They added their critique on the concluding episodes: "Unsatisfying, penultimate, and finale #OMITB episodes, and the murderer resolution a stretch."

However, they conceded some positive notes: "Though the final Sazz scene was sweet, and Oliver getting married and being happy warms my soul, cos, adore Martin Short."

Only Murders in the Building is available to stream on Disney+.
