Julie Bowen On Virginia’s Return In Adam Sandler’s ‘Happy Gilmore 2’

Hysteria! and Modern Family star Julie Bowen is thrilled to be returning to her roots in Adam Sandler’s Happy Gilmore 2.

Bowen’s first big break in film came in 1996 when she was cast as Virginia Venit, the girlfriend of Sandler’s title character in the smash hit sports comedy Happy Gilmore. The film, of course, finds hockey player Happy entering a golf tournament to earn enough money to buy Grandma’s (Frances Bay) house back from the IRS.

Naturally, Bowen is sworn to secrecy about the story of Happy Gilmore 2, but was able to share some details about Virginia’s return.

“We're shooting it right now and I'm not allowed to tell any plot points,” Bowen told me in a recent Zoom conversation for her new Peacock horror series Hysteria! “There are some flashbacks. I can tell you that we're going to see Virginia Venit through the ages. We get to see her from ‘96, so I get to have the old hair and makeup—the whole rigmarole—which is really fun.”

Also addressing the reported cameos in Happy Gilmore 2 from the likes of Deadline, Bowen said there are those you’ve already heard of and “about 20 more.”

Happy Gilmore 2 will mark Bowen’s third film with Sandler. In addition to starring alongside Sandler in the original Happy Gilmore movie and its sequel, Bowen also starred in Sandler’s 2020 comedy Hubie Halloween.

Who Else Is Starring In ‘Happy Gilmore 2’?

According to Netflix, the Happy Gilmore 2 cast includes Christopher McDonald, who is returning from the original film as Happy’s antagonistic golf rival Shooter McGavin, and Benito Martínez Ocasio—also known as singer Bad Bunny—in an unspecified role.

Adam Sandler also revealed a bit about Happy Gilmore 2 during an August appearance on Jason and Travis Kelce’s New Heights podcast.

"The movie itself picks up from an older guy who played golf a long time. Some stuff goes on in his life, and he's different and he's a bit of a mess," Sandler told the Kelce brothers (via People). "And then we try to get his life cooking again."

In Hysteria! Julie Bowen plays Linda Campbell, a resident of the small town of Happy Hollow, Michigan, during the “Satanic Panic” period in the 1980s.

When a star high school quarterback goes missing and residents believe he is the victim of a devil-worshipping cult, bizarre supernatural happenings start to happen and the town’s residents begin to panic.

All eight episodes of Hysteria!—which also stars Anna Camp and Bruce Campbell—are streaming exclusively on Peacock.

Happy Gilmore 2 does not yet have a release date.
