Here—a drama that reunites Tom Hanks, Robin Wright and director Robert Zemeckis—is being met with mostly negative reviews from critics.

Hanks and Wright, of course, previously worked with Zemeckis on the 1994 Best Picture Oscar winner Forrest Gump. The official logline for their reunion film reads, “Here is an original film about multiple families and a special place they inhabit. The story travels through generations, capturing the most relatable of human experiences.”

Rated PG-13, Here plays in previews Thursday before opening in theaters nationwide on Friday. Early reviews for the film, however, are not too glowing.

As of Wednesday, Rotten Tomatoes critics have given Here a 33% “rotten” rating based on 24 reviews.

Among the top RT critics who gave Here a “rotten” rating is Odie Henderson of the Boston Globe, who writes, “Couple the broad acting and cliché-ridden screenplay with the fixed-frame format, and Here comes off like a bad sitcom, or even worse, a school play made by a bunch of fifth-graders who decided to tackle Eugene O’Neill and Death of a Salesman.”

Peter Debruge of Variety also gave the film a “rotten” rating, writing, “Had Zemeckis built Here as a museum installation instead of a film, the fixed POV probably would have made sense. But we’ve come to be moved, and for that to work, the camera should too.”

Meanwhile, David Rooney of The Hollywood Reporter writes of Here, “No one fully manages to get out from under the movie’s preoccupation with visual technology at the expense of heart,” while William Bibbiani of The Wrap notes, “The concept is incredibly ambitious. The execution is dinner theater.”

‘Here’ Did Land Some Positive Reviews

Also among the Rotten Tomatoes critics who gave Here a “rotten” review is Mashable’s Kristy Puchko.

However, Puchko does show some admiration for Robert Zemeckis, writing, “Here is an experiment in framing and concept that fails. And yet, I'm in awe that Zemeckis did it. Even with the movie's rough edges, his passion and sentimentality is as clear as ever.”

While noting the film will be a hit or miss with audiences, IndieWire’s Ryan Lattanzio gave the film a “fresh” review, writing, If you’ve ever passed through or lived in a house and wondered who was there before you Herewill resonate. But if you have no curiosity, then there’s nothing, not a thing, ultimately here for you.”

Pete Hammond of Deadline Hollywood Daily also gave Here a “fresh” review, writing, “Zemeckis and... co-writer Eric Roth have gone the cinematic route, and even with a static camera manage to keep it all visually interesting using panels of different moments constantly popping up on screen changing the scene.”

Also starring Paul Bettany, Kelly Reilly and Michelle Dockery, Here—which is rated PG-13—plays in previews Thursday before opening in theaters nationwide on Friday.
