Ladies Night: Women Dominate Grammy Nominations
by Cathy Applefeld Olson · ForbesWomen continue to dominate the pop music charts, and they dominate the nominations for the 67th annual Grammy Awards, where Beyonce and Taylor Swift are in the running for all of the major categories.
Sabrina Carpenter, Billie Eilish, Ariana Grande, Chappell Roan and Charli XCX are among the crop of buzzy young women who will also compete in the categories of Album of the Year, Song of the Year and Record of the Year.
Powered by her country-R&B-roots amalgam Cowboy Carter, Beyonce, with 11 total nominations, leads in the number of nods for any artist in a single year and breaks the tie to become the most nominated artist in Grammys history, with 99 total noms.
Women garnered nominations for six of the eight slots for Record of the Year, accompanied only by The Beatles, for “Now and Then,”—the last song by the venerable group written and sung by John Lennon, developed with contributions by Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr—Kendrick Lamar, with “Not Like Us.” Beyonce (“Texas Hold ‘Em”) Sabrina Carpenter (“Espresso”), Charli XCX (“360”), Billie Eilish (“Birds of a Feather”), Chappell Roan (“Good Luck, Babe!”) and Taylor Swift Featuring Post Malone (“Fortnight”) round out the category.
For Song of the Year, women also took six of the eight nominations. Beyoncé (“Texas Hold ’Em”), Billie Eilish )“Birds Of A Feather”), Chappell Roan (“Good Luck, Babe!”), Lady Gaga & Bruno Mars (“Die With A Smile”), Sabrina Carpenter (“Please Please Please”) and Taylor Swift featuring Post Malone (“Fortnight”) will face off with Kendrick Lamar (“Not Like Us”) and Shaboozey (“A Bar Song (Tipsy)” in the category.
The Album of the Year category is also dominated by women, with Beyonce’s Cowboy Carter, Sabrina Carpenter’s Short’n’Sweet, Charli XCX’s Brat and Billie Eilish’s Hit Me Hard And Soft nominated alongside Andre 3000’s New Blue Sun and Jacob Collier’s Djesse Vol. 4.
Women also entirely swept several categories, among them Best Pop Duo/Group Performance, where Ariana Grande, Brandy & Monica (“The Boy Is Mine (Remix),” Beyoncé Featuring Post Malone (“Levii’s Jeans”), Charli XCX & Billie Eilish (“Guess”), Gracie Abrams Featuring Taylor Swift (“Us”) and Lady Gaga & Bruno Mars (“Die With A Smile”) are all up for the award.
After Beyonce, Charli XCX, Billie Eilish, Kendrick Lamar and Post Malone are tied for second place with seven nominations this year. Sabrina Carpenter, Chappell Roan and Taylor Swift are tied for third place, with six nods each.
