‘East Of Eden’ From Zoe Kazan A Go At Netflix

Netflix has ordered East of Eden, a seven episode limited series based on John Steinbeck’s famed novel in 1952. The book was adapted from the epic film of the same name in 1955 directed by Elia Kazan and featuring James Dean, Julie Harris, Raymond Massey, Burl Ives, Richard Davalos, and Jo Van Fleet. It told the story of a troubled young man (Dean) who vies for the attention of father (Massey) against his favored brother (Davalos).

Per the logline: East of Eden follows the "multi-generational Trask family saga explored from the perspective of the standout female character Cathy Ames, played by Florence Pugh."

Zoe Kazan, Elia Kazan’s granddaughter, is adapting the novel and will serve as co-showrunner with Jeb Stuart (Die Hard, Vikings: Valhalla).

“In the process of bringing this family saga to life, the resonance of my own familial connection to the material has not been lost on me,” said Zoe Kazan in a statement. “But it is Steinbeck’s writing — personal, shocking, profound and free — that has kept me enthralled to East of Eden since I first read the book as a young teen. Working on this has been the greatest joy, and I am thrilled by the cast and crew we are assembling — and deeply grateful to Netflix, Fifth Season & Anonymous Content for their support.”

In addition to Florence Pugh, the cast of East of Eden includes Christopher Abbott, Mike Faist and Hoon Lee. Fifth Season and Anonymous Content are producing.

The limited series is expected to air on an undisclosed date in 2025.
