'I thought baby nephew's name was a joke – it sounds like one you'd give to a dog'

A man has been slammed for laughing at his nephew's name believing it to be a joke.

He shared how his sister named her newborn son after a beloved video game character, much to his amusement. Upon hearing the name Ruff, he couldn't help but laugh, believing his sister was joking before revealing the baby's 'real' name.

He said on Reddit: "My sister had a baby. I'm happy for her. Her baby's name is Ruff. It sounds like a dog. I thought she was joking and laughed. I was wrong." When asked why he was laughing, he responded that it sounded like a dog barking. Ruff ruff?"

His laughter was not shared by his sister who became angry, accusing him of disrespect. She explained that the name held significance for her and her husband due to their love for an obscure video game character. Despite acknowledging her right to name her child as she wishes, he warned her about potential issues the name Ruff could cause her son in school.

He added: "I told her that she can name her child whatever she wants, but people will associate it and it might be hard for him in school. Wanting to know whether he's in the wrong, he has taken to social media to ask users for their thoughts.

He explained: "She won't return my texts or calls. My mum says I should have kept my mouth shut. Am I the only one seeing this? I didn't mean to be a jerk, but "Ruff"?! I'm not alone in thinking this could backfire, am I? " One commenter responded: "You gave an honest reaction to an absurd name. If she didn't like how you reacted, imagine how she'll like having to deal with all the school bullying coming this poor kid's way. I swear some people just don't think. Kids are not accessories."

Another user chimed in: "You're not the a***hole but because you ran your mouth you won't be asked to babysit now. You would have had so much fun with that kid, teaching Ruff to stay, roll over, and sit. The possibilities were endless." A third user quipped: "That kid is gonna have a Ruff life."
