As Halloween approaches, it's time to stock up on chocolates and sweets.

Many are planning their spooky costumes for a night of trick-or-treating, and while there will be plenty of familiar brands in Halloween buckets and bags, it seems many people are mispronouncing some of the most famous ones.

With this in mind, the team at QuillBot has compiled a list of popular chocolate bars and sweets you might see this Halloween, and revealed exactly how they should be pronounced.

One such item likely to feature this Halloween is the reliable M&M's. These sweet treats come in a variety of flavours, like caramel, peanut, and classic chocolate, ensuring the small confectionery is widely recognised.

Despite its simplicity, many of us get confused about how to pronounce the brand's well-known name. It's often pronounced as "em-en-ems," but the correct pronunciation is "em-and-ems," emphasising the "and".

Other variations have also emerged, with one person taking to X, formerly Twitter, to share their child's adorable pronunciation of the multicoloured chocolate treat. They wrote: "My child thinks that M&M's are called MMMs (like em-em-ems) and if it isn't the cutest."

The Australian podcast Not My Cup of Tea saw a bit of banter among its hosts over the pronunciation of a well-known confectionery brand.

Initiating the debate, host Mitchell Coombs pointed out to his colleague Aishlin Garnett, "Darling, you've been screwing up big time and I don't think you even know. You've been mispronouncing a certain word for as long as I've known you."

Mitchell craftily prompted her by inquiring what she'd call the "small, round, chocolate candy" that are all "different colours" but aren't Smarties. To this, co-host Aishlin confidently answered: "M&M's correctly emphasising the 'and'.

He queried further,: "Why do you put so much emphasis on the 'and' and the second 'em'?" Ashley fired back: "Because there's an 'and' in the middle - they are 'em and ems', okay? The last 'em' doesn't get any credit, it just gets morphed into the 'and'. I don't know why I'm getting so angry about this - 'em and ems'."

Co-host Talecia Vescio chimed in, mistakenly asserting that the correct pronunciation was 'em 'n' em', which sparked further discussion. Talecia was left astounded upon revisiting the M&M's logo, noting the ampersand representing 'and'.

Originating in the 1940s, the name M&M's derives from the surnames of chocolate pioneers Forrest Mars and Bruce Murrie—the M and M.
