An actress from Burnside is playing the lead role in a production of the Wedding Singer at a theatre over the Halloween weekend

The acclaimed Glasgow-based Green Door Theatre company will be performing their version of the musical, which is based on the hit movie from 1998 starring Drew Barrymore and Adam Sandler, who played the male and female leads as Julia Sullivan and Robbie Hart, respectively.

In the Green Door Theatre production Julia will be played by Burnside’s Kelly Johnston, while Robbie will be played by the Lanarkshire actress’s real life best friend, Andi Denny.

The Wedding Singer is an uplifting romantic comedy with massive 1980s inspired musical numbers, including the memorable original songs; “Somebody Kill Me Please”, and “I Wanna Grow Old With You” from the movie.

Both Andi and Kelly are professionally trained performers and theatre creatives, who have now worked on nearly 20 various shows and concerts together since meeting in 2010, not knowing they would one day be cast as on-stage sweethearts!

Kelly, a former pupil at Cathkin High, is more used to playing comedy characters but landed her dream role with Julia and has really brought this sweet, fun, and lovable character to life.

The 33-year-old said: “The Wedding Singer is one of my favourite movies and I love the musical just as much.

“It has been so much fun playing Julia and very different for me as I tend to play the comedy characters rather than the ‘leading lady’ type.

“It’s been a real challenge at times but It is a real bucket list moment that I am not ready to let go of.”

Andi plays alongside Kelly as Robbie, the lead singer of a wedding band and a hopeless romantic who’s recently been jilted by his rock “goddess” fiancé Linda, played by Ruth Tower.
