Virgin River fans have been taking shots at the hit Netflix show’s latest season, which took its characters to some surprising places.

The romantic adventures of Mel Monroe (played by Alexandra Breckenridge) and Jack Sheridan (Martin Henderson) will soon continue in the highly anticipated sixth outing of the small-town drama.

Until then, viewers have been discussing the story so far, including a rather shocking decision by young lovers Denny Cutler (Kai Bradbury) and Lizzie (Sarah Dugdale).

In season four, newcomer Denny, the long-lost grandson of Vernon ‘Doc’ Mullins (Tim Matheson) is caught stealing pills from Doc’s clinic and transferring a large sum of money.

After initially being suspected of being a con artist, the drama turns tragic when Denny reveals he needs the pills to treat his Huntington’s disease, an incurable condition that causes brain cells to decay over time.

However, Denny and his relationship with Lizzie has since ruffled fans’ feathers when the couple decided to go through with a surprise pregnancy, despite the very real possibility that Denny’s hereditary condition will be passed onto the baby.

A recent Reddit post highlighted one fan’s outrage, using the experience of another user with Huntington’s whose parents kept it from them as an example of what could go wrong for Denny and Lizzie.

“OP in this post found out they have Huntington's Disease and their parents kept it from them,” they shared.

“The comments from others who had a similar situation happen is heartbreaking. I'm so mad at Denny and Lizzie for how reckless they were getting pregnant.”

They added their damning verdict: “This is the worst VR storyline imo.”

Many other Virgin River fans agreed with this user’s assessment in the comments, with one penning: “I HATE that they made this storyline the way they did.

“Huntington’s has a 50/50 chance of being passed down and Lizzie is just all whatever! about it.”

Someone else fumed: “I don’t care if Denny is the healthiest weirdo in 100 miles VR writers should be fired and blacklisted for the pregnant Lizzie storyline. They might as well have just killed off the character.”

“I draw the line at Huntingtons, super selfish to put that on a kid,” another said.

“And a terrible way to die, not only for you but your loved ones.”

And a final fan wrote: “I'm in healthcare and thought it was f***ing weird. Honestly to me they didn't have to make him sick. It didn't really add much to the storyline for me.”

Stills from the new season have confirmed Lizzie will be a few months pregnant when the series returns, so how will Virgin River handle the next chapter of one of its most contested storylines?

Virgin River season 6 premieres Thursday, December 19 on Netflix.
