Speaking to host Michael Strahan, Lovato spoke about what inspired her to make “Child Star,” which focuses on the lives of several former child actors, including Drew Barrymore, Christina Ricci and Kenan Thompson of “Saturday Night Live.”

“It was something that had been forming in my brain for several years: the subject of child stars, the fascination behind why people get into the industry at such a young age, how it affects us, the history of child stars too, dating back to Shirley Temple and Jackie Coogan,” Lovato explained.

Lovato also discussed working with activist Chris McCarty, who is working to protect child influencers.

“There’s a bill on Gov. Gavin Newsom’s desk and he has until Sept. 30 to sign it, but this would implement the legislation that we’re talking about that would protect and compensate minors that are on social media,” Lovato added.

In May, Lovato attended the Met Gala in a custom Prabal Gurung look. The designer spoke with WWD about designing gowns for her, Simone Ashley and Maria Sharapova. He took inspiration from J.G. Ballard’s short story, “The Garden of Time,” which was also the theme of the 2024 gala.

“I really wanted to try to express the story of ‘The Garden of Time’ from start to finish — with the softness of flowers picked in the garden through the range of colors and materials for each guest, even through the flowers freeze each time they’re picked in this tale.” Gurung said. “The platinum mylar flowers on Demi’s gown represented the story’s progression, where picking the flower that froze became something beautiful in a totally different way.”
