'I tried the limited edition Baileys that tastes like cake - and I'm here for it'

When it comes to Christmas food and drink, there are certain staples that truly encapsulate the flavour of the festive season - from mince pies to pigs in blankets, large tubs of Celebrations to mulled wine. However, for many, Baileys is a must-have Christmas treat and, as fans of the cream liqueur brand are aware, supermarkets have been offering significant discounts from as early as October to entice us to indulge.

As the proud co-editor of Secret Elves Club, the Mirror's year-round newsletter celebrating all things Christmas, Narin Flanders is a self-proclaimed Baileys enthusiast, but for many, it remains a winter beverage. Nevertheless, Diageo, the company behind Baileys, has been making every effort to persuade consumers to enjoy this iconic drink throughout the year.

There are now frequent limited edition flavours introduced throughout the year, including mint, salted caramel, pina colada and even a Deliciously Light version with 40% fewer calories than Baileys Original and, in my view, doesn't compromise on taste. But now, for a limited period, a new variant is creating quite a buzz among shoppers so she thought she'd give it a go.

"The creators of Baileys Birthday Cake claim it tastes like sponge cake, but that doesn't quite capture it.," writes Narin. "Upon opening the bottle, you're greeted with a subtle aroma of cake, and it's the delicious homemade variety, not one wrapped in plastic from a petrol station.

"Upon taking a sip, there's a burst of vanilla with a hint of buttercream. It retains Baileys' signature alcohol warmth, but the whiskey taste isn't as pronounced as in the Original, making it incredibly drinkable without being overly sweet - though it's certainly a beverage for those with a sweet tooth.

"Baileys recommends topping a glass with whipped cream and sprinkles for the ultimate birthday drink, at which point I'd find it more appealing than cake. They also suggest pouring it over ice cream, creating a heatwave-friendly version of a birthday cake if you add a candle on top."

After sampling numerous limited edition flavours over the years, Narin was pleased to see Birthday Cake Baileys priced so reasonably - currently £13 on Amazon and Morrisons, especially when demand often exceeds supply causing prices from online retailers to rise.

"While Birthday Cake Baileys isn't my favourite among all the limited edition flavours - that accolade goes to Mint Choc Shake, which has an almost dark chocolate taste without the cocoa overpowering the mint or the classic Baileys warmth - it's definitely one of the best in the range.

"It's the perfect present for any Baileys aficionado in your life, but let's not forget that treating yourself is entirely acceptable as well. It also feels lighter than the Original, making it a great summer drink for cooler evenings."

And Narin isn't the only one who appreciates the new flavour. Baileys Birthday Cake currently boasts a 4.5 out of 5 rating on Amazon, with numerous customers lauding both its taste and the value for money at its current price. At the moment, fans of Irish cream liqueurs are spoilt for choice. Alongside Baileys on the shelves, several relative newcomers to the UK market are also making waves.

Coole Swan has been available online via specialist retailers and Amazon for a while but recently hit M&S shelves. Meanwhile Five Farms Irish Liqueur is a small batch artisan version of the festive favourite now available in the UK through stockists including Amazon and The Whisky Exchange.
