A ‘Jane the Virgin’ Favorite Popped Up on ‘Matlock’ — and She’ll Be Back

Jane the Virgin” aficionados were likely waiting for one of the beloved dramedy’s cast members to pop up on “Jane” creator Jennie Snyder Urman‘s new show, CBS’s “Matlock.” In Episode 3, they got their (our) wish.

Yael Grobglas, who played sharp Petra on “Jane,” swung by the offices of Jacobson & Moore as a special jury consultant with a great gift: She can tell when someone is lying. “The Meerkat” aka Shae is wonderful for sniffing out less-than-ideal jurors, but big trouble for Madeline Matlock (Kathy Bates) who, in case you haven’t heard, is secretly undercover at the law firm, hoping to find out which of three fancy lawyers hid documents a decade ago that would have brought the opioid crisis to an end sooner. That’s a season-long runner on top of the case-of-the-week mystery.

“[Yael] comes back multiple times [throughout the season],” Urman told IndieWire. “I think her next one is Episode 7.”

Grobglas is a particularly fun addition to a program already earning raves for its smart conceit. It’s no wonder that CBS recently renewed the program — after only two episodes airing — for a second season. But while fans are just getting to know the whole crew, Urman promises the intriguing twist about who at the law firm is responsible for hiding documents will be solved by the end of the season; they aren’t going to drag that part out longer.

“You will know definitively by the end of the episode [in this season finale] who did what, when, and how,” Urman promised. “So we will solve that, and then that will sort of open up veins of story.”

Another big season-long question is the will-they, won’t-they tension between the delightful Olympia (Skye P. Marshall) and Julian (Jason Ritter). The two lawyers are in the midst of a divorce, but plenty of fans are already hoping they find a way to work it out.

“It’s complicated,” Urman said with a laugh. “You know it’s complicated. There are backs and forths and it was a long marriage, and I root for them, but I also know what gets between them. So there’s ups and downs.”

“Matlock” airs new episodes on CBS Thursdays.
