The Queen of Christmas started her celebration with her annual social media post signaling the switch from spooky season to holiday season. This time around she delivered an “Addams Family” theme, as Morticia and Gomez danced a killer tango. Of course it was long before she realized “It’s Time!!!” and those classic opening notes let us know we could begin our non-stop streams of “All I Want For Christmas Is You.”

However, before we get too deep into our #MariahSZN bag, we need to talk about how this icon isn’t being appreciated enough. We know it may sound a little crazy, but Mariah deserves more flowers than she gets for her impact and influence on Black music. In case you weren’t born yet when the legend was dominating the charts so hard no one else could top them, allow us to remind you why she’s considered one of the greatest artists of all time.
According to Billboard, among her achievements, “her record sum of Hot 100 No. 1s among solo acts, ‘All I Want for Christmas Is You’ reigns as the top title in the history of Billboard’s Holiday 100 chart” and she’s “the only artist with three songs to top the Hot 100 for at least 14 weeks each.” “One Sweet Day” with Boyz II Men reigned for 16 weeks in 1995-96, “We Belong Together” topped the charts for 14 weeks in 2005 and her signature Christmas classic was No. 1 for 14 weeks when it was originally released in 1994. In fact, the 93 total weeks she’s topped the Hot 100 charts is more than any other act.

You name a record and Mariah has probably held it, or still holds it. This year marks the 20th anniversary of her album “The Emancipation of Mimi” and the 30th anniversary og “Merry Christmas.” Even with all her history-making, record-breaking success, she’s still underappreciated by the industry. After 10 years of eligibility, she was finally nominated for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame this year, though she didn’t get in, something she still seems a little annoyed with.
“Everybody was calling me going, ‘I think you’re getting in!’ and so I was excited about it,” Carey told the Los Angeles Times. “But then it didn’t happen. My lawyer [Allen Grubman] got into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame before me.”
If you’re only familiar with Mariah Carey through “All I Want For Christmas Is You,” then you need to immediately go to your favorite streaming site and find a best of playlist. From “Fantasy,” to “My All,” “Heartbreaker,” “We Belong Together,” “Make it Happen,” to “Always Be My Baby,” there is a song for whatever you’re going through. You can thank us later.
